University group pushes students to register to vote - Iowa City Press-Citizen (new window)

Iowa PIRG, or Public Interest Research Group, is in the midst of a New Voters Project drive. Their immediate target is to register 300 people by Thursday. They will be stationed inside the IMU or in Hubbard Park, weather pending, from noon to 4 p.m. today and Thursday.

Every four years Americans hear how the younger generation is going to make its voice known at the polls. While the country has yet to see young people truly come out in force, Iowa's Secretary of State, Rock the Vote and Iowa Public Interest Research Group's New Voters Project are teaming up to encourage participation in the caucuses.

A member of the Iowa chapter of PIRG was on campus Wednesday with clipboards and giveaways similar to those that credit-card companies use to lure college students into high-interest credit plans.

Vote for Safe Climate Act - The Daily Iowan (new window)

On March 20, a bill known as the Safe Climate Act of 2007 was introduced to Congress by Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif. The bill calls for a gradual (2 percent) reduction in emissions every year beginning in 2010, as well as the creation of a Climate Reinvestment Fund to develop new energy technologies, protect consumers from energy-cost increases, and safeguard wildlife and water resources. Dave Loebsack, the representative of Iowa's 2nd District, has yet to voice his support for this important piece of legislation. As a congressman, Loebsack has a moral responsibility to take action on this issue, and as voters, we have a moral responsibility to encourage him to vote in favor of this bill.

Clean car show promotes alternative energy - Iowa State Daily (new window)

Students saw a few environmentally friendly alternatives to the normal car at the clean car show on Tuesday. The parking lot between the Design Building and Howe Hall displayed electric hybrid models of a Toyota Prius and a Honda Accord, a Chevrolet Tahoe designed to run on an ethanol-gasoline mixture and a CyRide bus that runs on soy diesel. There was also a Segway and a normal bicycle on display.

Ames urged to take greener measures - Iowa State Daily (new window)

Imagine the city of Ames recognizing the threat of global warming and taking measures to eliminate emissions into the environment before even the U.S. government and executive administration. Given recent push by ActivUs, a student organization dedicated to political awareness and engagement, and recent exploration by the city of Ames, this ideology may soon be a reality.

When temperatures fluctuate nearly 50 degrees in a matter of days, one local group wants Iowans to recognize the reason for such extreme changes: global warming. The Iowa Student Public Interest Research Group hosted a viewing of Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth on Thursday night and a follow-up discussion with Sen. Joe Bolkcom, D-Iowa City regarding future energy plans for the Hawkeye State.

'Want better gas mileage? Make sure your tires are properly inflated,' read a poster hanging on the wall at the ActivUs campaign kickoff meeting Monday night. Campus climate change and student debt were the main issues discussed at the meeting. ActivUs is a student group on campus that runs Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) campaigns at a local and national level.

Satellite Voting Intended to Increase Student Turnout - The Northern Iowan (new window)

Tomorrow and Thursday, students will have a chance to prove the critics of young people’s voting habits wrong. Satellite voting stations will be in place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Maucker Union, where students will be able to register to vote, change their registration and vote for the general election officially scheduled for Nov. 7.

Voter Registration Deadline Fast Approaching - The Northern Iowan (new window)

University of Northern Iowa students have no excuse for not being registered to vote in the Nov. 7 elections. Several groups on campus are diligently promoting student registration and voting. One issue being addressed is students who need to change their registration from their hometowns to Black Hawk county.

ISU students must register in Story County by Oct. 28 to vote locally in the upcoming midterm elections. The election - which includes races for governor, U.S. House of Representatives and the state legislature, as well as other state, county and local offices - is slated for Nov. 7.

New SGA President Discusses His Intentions - Iowa State Daily (new window)

The 10-foot inflatable ball-and-chain appeared southeast of the Campanile on Tuesday. The prop was used by the New Voters Project to promote student voting. The project is a national, non-partisan campaign that aims to get more young people to vote using a registration, education and mobilization method.
